Fore! Carl Hiassen signs The Downhill Lie

Carl Hiaasen is one of America’s most reliably funny and entertaining novelists. He specializes in broadly diverting mystery-thrillers set in Southern Florida, and his volume Strip Harry was made into that awful Demi Moore/Burt Reynolds movie, but don’t clutch the film against Hiaasen — the uncommon’s extremely fun. A columnist for the Miami Proclaimer, Hiaasen brings an anti-incorporated sensibility to his books, that’s cognate one part concerned environmentalist, two gifts outraged muckraker.

In his latest volume, The Downhill Lie: A Hacker’s Go back to a Ruinous Play (Knopf, $22, 207 pp), Hiaasen offers a nonfiction make different of pace. In his 50s, he takes up golf again after a 30 year non-appearance from the game, and any expectations that he’ll ripe out on the links are on eagle's wings dashed:

Published conveniently in set forward of Father’s Day, The Downhill Lie features some cachinnation-out-loud anecdotes when Hiaasen dabbles in hobbling gimmicks to make better his game, as well as tells stories about mishaps involving turtles, toads and a sunken golf cart. His anti-exhibition streak also puts some teeth in his tracing of the golf assiduity’s debauchery. Plus, he reveals an uncharacteristic impressible streak about golfing with his slow father and in one's teens son.

Hiaasen will be speaking and signing copies of his volume at 7 p.m. tonight, May 12, at Cabbage Auditorium at Georgia Perimeter Society-Clarkston Campus.
