Tony Horwitz: Rediscovering the New World
Tony Horwitz’s go on foot books have led him into the of great depth South, around the sky-colored Pacific and, most not long ago, on a series of treks around the United States to rediscover over a hundred’s virtue of history that Americans have all but out of one's recollection. Children in the U.S. are strained about the arrival of Columbus in 1492 and the English people settlers in 1620. But who explored the so-called New Creation in the years between? What happened?
Inspired by a dialogue with a park ranger during a luck visit to Plymouth Stone, Horwitz decided to find out with a careful search trip around the United States. As he writes, he wanted to reply the questions, “What would it be cognate to explore this New Universe, not only in books but on the soil? To take a pre-Pilgrimage through timely America that ended at Plymouth Stone instead of inauguration there?” I caught up with him via email to worry out a little more about the fascinating stories in A Journey by water Long and Exotic: Rediscovering the New Cosmos.
World Hum: Which of the explorers did you apprehend the least about when you started chirography the book? Whose record fascinated you the most?
Tony Horwitz: I knew almost nothing about any of these explorers, and that was the force for writing the work. As I dived in, I also discovered that the diminutive I thought I knew—about Columbus, say, or John Metal-worker—was 90 percent legend. If I had to peck one story that was especially fascinating, it would be the inadmissible trek made by four castaways from a Spanish celerity to Florida in the 1520s. They became confidence healers to the Indians who took them in, were passed from sept to tribe as revered physic men and, over the course of eight years, wandered occident to the Gulf of California and then southern into Spanish-held Mexico. In other language, they crossed the complete continent 270 years before Lewis and Clark. One of them was a dark slave named Estevanico, and another a Spaniard, Alvar Nu?ez Cabeza de Vaca, who wrote a diligent account of the excursion that reads a bit resembling the first great American path trip.
