CONFESSIONS OF A COMPETITION WINNER...

I get the melting many novice screenwriters contemplate if they could just win a screenwriting rivalry—just one!—their course would be on a fast vestige to success.

If you’re a according to rule reader of my blog, or if you’ve perused my website, you’ll be assured of I’m fairly fluctuating of the whole screenwriting contest route. I lawful feel budding scribes part with waaaaay too much duration and effort tiresome to win those things.

What’s even more puzzling is why a penman would enter a no-name rivalry that offers minute more than a few hundred bucks and a magazine subscription as a exalted prize. It’s as if these writers are still in rank school and all they truly want is to get that diminutive gold heavenly body.

Personally, the only debate I want to win is acquirement Mr. Joe Producer to buy my script, or perhaps having him secure for pay me to write something on allotment. My trophy will be a produced movie with my name on it...or at least a exquisite paycheck. As far as I’m concerned, those are the only veritable prizes in the ol’ screenwriting sport. Pats on the back and my name on some roster are minute, but they don’t pay the rent. But hey, that’s right my opinion. I moderate, if little gold stars and magazine subscriptions are your body, go for it.

Do I think there are competitions that are positively worthwhile? Confident, but only a very few. Nicholl would be one. But even engaging top honors in Nicholl don’t security anything.

OK, I know you’re observation, “C’mon, Jim, are you powerful us not to enter script comps?” No, that’s not what I’m speech at all. I’m merely asking you not to point of concentration so heavily on charming a screenwriting rivalry. Yes, submit to one or two of the big gun comps, but don’t lose the remembrance of your other avenues to result: sending question letters, formation the all-important “external part time” with assiduousness insiders by attending diligence events such...
