Newsday purchase part of a history of growth

In the descend of 1940, when Drawn out Island was dwelling to potato farms and tiny towns and villages, Newsday got its shrink in a former automobile dealership in Hempstead.

In the room, its publisher -- Alicia Patterson, a limb of a powerful media parents and children whose third husband bought the journal for her -- flouted expectations, ruling the tabloid through two decades of swift growth. As Lengthy Island grew and the environs took bottom, Newsday grew with it. It was as if the lot of one was tied to the star of the other.

By the time of Patterson's departure in 1963, Newsday had won a Pulitzer Premium, grown to a motion in a circle of nearly 400,000 and established itself as a greater player in the booming neighborhood. While Newsday's storied gone is a narrative of development, its future appears more indefinite as the paper continues to rejoin to "new" media such as the Internet. With Cablevision's bargain for of the newspaper, and as Newsday changes hands for the fourth duration in its 68-year annals and the second duration in six months -- unsettled federal approval -- these issues continue the same. Another chapter in the Newsday record remains to be written.
