Newsday purchase part of a history of growth

In the descend of 1940, when Drawn out Island was dwelling to potato farms and tiny towns and villages, Newsday got its shrink in a former automobile dealership in Hempstead.

In the room, its publisher -- Alicia Patterson, a limb of a powerful media parents and children whose third husband bought the journal for her -- flouted expectations, ruling the tabloid through two decades of swift growth. Another chapter in the Newsday record remains to be written.
